At the top of a busy, hilly artery in Collegeville, PA, there is an illuminated, double-sided sign advertising a family-owned Italian bakery and pizzeria. At first glance, you’d think there’s nothing extraordinary about this sign — but you’d be wrong.

In the Greater Philadelphia Area, you can’t go more than a few days without seeing people — many of whom are often quite influential — sharing Collegeville Italian Bakery’s sign.

With the summer heat broken and school back in session, I thought now was a good time to start a home project: sanding the fence in my backyard.

It’s nothing crazy, but it’s taken some time over the last week or so.

As I’ve wiped off sawdust off my hands and face after each session, I’ve come to notice the similarities between sanding and marketing.

Do Your Research

Before I started this project, I had to be honest with myself — I really didn’t know what I was doing.

Wanting to do it right, I had a bunch of questions.

Do I need…

Let’s get this out of the way, first — Don Draper was a bad man.

Despite the fact that he was a fictional character, nearly everything he did in his personal life in the brilliant AMC drama, Mad Men, was backward.

My wife loathes him.

We can’t get through an episode without her commenting about how little she thinks of him. (It’s her first time through the series.)

“He’s a great character,” she says, “and Jon Hamm (the actor portraying Draper) is great, but I hate him so much.”

Maybe it’s wrong for me to say this, but I’ve always…

I love the farmers’ market.

My friends and family find it funny how geeked up I get about bicolor corn, zucchini, and mesclun greens. I just find it so enjoyable. (This is 31, I suppose.)

Nearly every Saturday, from May to November, I get up, walk the dog, and then head over to see my farmer friends.

To my benefit, the one in my hometown has been voted as being the best market in the county. There are vendors who come from all across Southeastern Pennsylvania to be at the Lansdale Farmers’ Market.

“In 1,000 feet, turn left — then turn right at the fork”.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a soothing voice guiding you along the way in life? A guide who will watch out for you, making sure that whenever you need to make a big decision you’ve got nothing to worry about?

Wouldn’t that be something?

GPS Signal Lost

I left college for the last time in August 2010. I say last time because it wasn’t the first time, unfortunately.

The night I realized I couldn’t bring myself back to the Community College’s campus for class registration, I broke down in my…

Pope Francis came through my hometown of Philadelphia this weekend on his final stop in his first trip visit to America. It was sensational, full of moments I will never forget even though I was 20 miles away watching on television.

For the people who there, absorbing His Holiness’ presence first-hand, it must have been even more awe-inspiring. What a story to tell! “I got to see Pope Francis — in person!

That is exactly what the news stations continued to talk about, as well. ‘What a story they’ll be able to tell.’ It would have been enough to stop…

Last week, I had the privilege of attending Social Media Marketing World with 2,499 of my closest social friends. There were over 130 speakers at the conference with many All-Stars in attendance.

On Friday morning, Chris Penn continued to show why he is one of these stars.

Following a dominating performance during the morning’s keynote, Penn went on to pack back-to-back presentations, showcasing his wizardry of predictive analytics, spreadsheets, and mathematics. I attended the second presentation and stood in the back as every seat was occupied by marketers driven to become better, more data-driven thinkers.

After explaining every action he…
